National Trust HQ, Heelis, Swindon

The new interior of the National Trust’s HQ building, Heelis, in Swindon, led by Wylde IA, exemplifies a commitment to both sustainability and enhancing the working environment. Under the banner of “Same but Different”. The project aimed to refine existing spaces while implementing meaningful changes to meet the Trust’s operational needs.

Large-format images from the National Trust’s extensive photographic database were strategically placed on feature walls, fostering a sense of connection to the organization’s core purpose and the places it preserves. Working closely with Wylde IA, Artworks supported the integration of these elements into the overall design palette surveying the space and drawing up all the elevations showing how the images would work, ensuring harmony and cohesion throughout.

Printed acoustic panels

Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the project, aligning with the National Trust’s policies. The use of Artworks environmentally friendly materials, such as the 12mm ALTO with 60% recycled content for feature ceiling acoustics and hanging screens, demonstrates this commitment. Additionally, textiles made from sea plastics were utilized in the ALTO Tex acoustic walls.

Furthermore, the combination of imagery with ALTO acoustic materials allowed for the introduction of effective acoustic absorption in both open and closed spaces. ALTO Tex fabric walling in meeting rooms and other key areas contributed to improved acoustic performance, enhancing the comfort and usability of these spaces.

Overall, the project celebrates the essence of the National Trust, showcasing its diverse properties and places while prioritizing sustainability and user experience. With careful attention to detail and collaboration between Wylde IA, Artworks and the client,  Heelis has been transformed into a workspace that reflects the organization’s values and mission.

The team LOVE the space – I gave them a tour yesterday and they are all super pleased with how it looks and functions. This has been a project well delivered – thank you so much for Wylde IA & Artworks input and help to design and deliver such a great workplace!
